CCP Antibody Test: High, Low, Causes and Clinical Meaning

◉ What is Anti-CCP test?

Anti-CCP test is a blood test used to detect the presence of specific antibodies called anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in the blood.

The anti-CCP antibodies are highly specific to rheumatoid arthritis. The test helps doctors assess its aggressiveness and differentiate it from other joint diseases.

However, false positive or negative results may occur. Therefore, test interpretation should always take into account the patient's symptoms as well as the results of other tests.

Normal and High Values Anti-CCP Test (3)
Anti-CCP Test Result (EU/ml) Interpretation

Less than 20

Negative (Normal)

20-39

Weakly Positive

40-59

Moderately Positive

More than 60

Strongly Positive

◉ What is it used for?

The presence of anti-CCP antibodies in your blood indicates that your immune system is attacking your joints, which can lead to joint deformity and disability over time.

Testing for anti-CCP antibodies can aid in the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and assist in differentiating it from other types of arthritis, as anti-CCP antibodies are less commonly found in conditions such as osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, and Sjogren's syndrome.

◉ How can I prepare for the test?

You do not need to fast or avoid any food or drink before the anti-CCP test. However, you should inform your doctor about any medications or supplements that you are taking, as they may affect the results of the test.

◉ Normal range

The normal range of anti-CCP test is lower than 20 u/mL. This means that if your anti-CCP test result is less than 20 u/mL, you are negative for anti-CCP antibodies and unlikely to have rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases.

some people with rheumatoid arthritis may have a negative anti-CCP test result, especially in the early stages of the disease. Therefore, the anti-CCP test should be interpreted along with other clinical and laboratory findings.

◉ High values of the Anti-CCP test

1. Causes

The exact cause of high anti-CCP antibody levels in RA is not fully understood. However, it is believed that the immune system's response to citrullinated proteins plays a role in the development of RA.

Genetic and environmental factors are thought to contribute to the production of anti-CCP antibodies in susceptible individuals

2. Symptoms

Symptoms associated with high anti-CCP test values may include:

◉ Low values of the Anti-CCP test

Low values of anti-CCP test are usually considered normal and indicate that you do not have anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in your blood.

However, it's important to note that a negative anti-CCP test does not completely rule out the possibility of RA:

◉ Additional tests

In the context of diagnosing and evaluating rheumatoid arthritis, several other analytical tests are commonly used in conjunction with anti-CCP test, such as:

◉ Conclusion

In summary, the anti-CCP test is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of rheumatoid arthritis. Its ability to accurately detect anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies aids in early diagnosis, differentiation from other types of arthritis, prediction of disease progression, and optimization of treatment strategies.

By utilizing this test in clinical practice, healthcare professionals can provide targeted care and improve the quality of life for individuals living with rheumatoid arthritis.
