Summary :
Brain Heart Infusion Broth, BHIB, is an enriched non-selective general purpose broth used for the cultivation of a wide variety of organisms from a variety of clinical and non-clinical specimens.
It is a highly nutritious base that meets the growth needs of many types of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts and molds
Brain Heart Infusion Broth can be used as a blood culture medium or as an enrichment broth for fastidious organisms. It is recommended by the APHA for the examination of water and wastewater and by the CLSI for the preparation of inoculums used in antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Brain Heart Infusion Broth
Suspend the components, dehydrated powder, in water (37 g in 1000 ml of purified/distilled water). Bring to a boil and completely dissolve the medium.
Distribute in test tubes and sterilize in an autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes.

This culture medium is highly nutritious and buffered to support the growth of fastidious and nonfastidious microorganisms, including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
Enzymatic digestion of animal tissues and brain-heart infusion provide amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, vitamins and minerals for the growth of organisms.
Glucose is the source of carbohydrates that microorganisms use by fermentative action.
Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance of the medium.
Disodium phosphate is the buffering agent.
◈ No turbidity: no growth
◈ Turbidity: growth (presence of organisms)
